Mearl Reed

BOONE, Iowa—Mearl Reed, age 64 of Boone, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, February 28, 2023, with his family by his side.

Mearl Herman Reed was born on July 21, 1958 in Story City, the son of Larry and Mary Ann (Hasstedt) Reed. He graduated from Boone High School in 1977. Following graduation, Mearl worked for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad. In 1978, Mearl began working for Tom Walters Company until his retirement in the early 2000s.

Mearl was united in marriage with Marcia Mayse in 1999. He adopted her two sons, Ross and Patrick. The couple later divorced.

Mearl was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in rural Boone. He loved movies and music; his favorites were John Wayne and Elvis Presley. Mearl loved to go for hikes at The Ledges State Park, fishing and taking road trips with his boys wherever the gravel roads would take them. Papa Mearl loved his grandson Winston and “their” dog, Olaf; He loved to sit in his chair and cuddle with his dog. Mearl also enjoyed card games and drawing.

Mearl was preceded in death by his grandparents, Herman and Violet Hasstedt and Mearl and Ada Reed; and his father, Larry Reed in 2019. He is survived by his mother, Mary Reed of Boone; sons, Ross (Megan) Reed of Ogden and Patrick Reed of Boone; grandson, Winston Reed; sister, Jean (Ted) Loper of Indiana; niece, Violet (Grant) Short and their children, Harlow, Emery, Spencer and nephew, Nathan Loper; the mother of his children, Marcia Mayse; aunts, Betty (Ray) Bill and D. Violette; along with numerous cousins and friends.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 until 7:00 P.M. on Friday, March 3, 2023 at the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall Streets, with family present from 4:00 until 7:00 P.M. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, March 4, 2023 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, north of Boone. Burial will be in St. Paul’s Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the family or to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
