Steven Earl Gus

BOONE, Iowa—Steven Earl Gus, age 66 of Boone, IA, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, March 25, 2021, after a courageous battle with ALS, (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). Steve was born at the Hamilton Air Force Base in San Francisco, CA on March 2, 1955, to the proud parents of Earl and Peggy (Yorgensen) Weigel.

The family lived in Bangkok, Thailand for two years before returning to Madrid, Iowa. After his parents’ divorce, his mother married Howard Gus, who then adopted Steve. He graduated with the Boone High School’s Class of 1973. Steve married Becky Schall on June 28, 1974 and they were blessed with Andy in 1983 and Ali in 1987. Steve was constant in his devotion to his children. The couple later divorced.

He married Kathy Rourick on June 21, 1997 in Boone, and they have laughed and enjoyed life together ever since. She lovingly cared for Steve through his illness. His quick wit and kindness sustained those around him.

Always industrious and partial to Boone, Steve worked at the former Boone County Tire, Moffitt’s Ford, and was proud to have worked forty years at Bacon Jewelers where he made lifelong friends. He created, owned, and operated Gus’ Machine Shop where he enjoyed programming machines and working with his son.

As a devout Catholic, Steve served faithfully as Grand Knight of Leo Council #814, Deputy Grand Knight, member and President of the Sacred Heart Parish Council, and as a church usher. He served on the Board of the Rolling Meadows Estates; was an avid sportsman, loved shooting skeet; and was a member of Pheasants Forever. He held all offices at the Boone County Sportsmen’s Club, and ran the Tuesday night shooting events for many years.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Steve Gus.

Steve is survived by his wife, Kathy Gus of Boone; son, Andy (Britt) Gus of Ogden; daughter, Ali Gus (Aaron Schweizer) of Wheat Ridge, CO; sisters, Sherry Baranosky of Des Moines and Susan (Mick) Jacobson of Boone; along with several nieces and nephews.

Steve’s wishes were to be cremated. A gathering of friends and family will be Sunday, March 28, 2021 at the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall, where the family will be present from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, March 29, 2021 at 11:00 A.M. at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Boone with Rev. Tim Johnson officiating. Burial of his cremated remains will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall Streets in Boone. Online condolences may be left to Steve’s family www.schroedermemorialchapel.com. In memory of Steve, memorials may be directed to the Boone County Sportsmens’ Club.
