The Madrid girls track team delivered a strong performance at their Class 1A state qualifying meet on Thursday, May 15, at Madrid, with Paige Richards capturing four individual titles and multiple athletes earning state berths.
Richards was unstoppable, winning the 100-meter dash in 12.48 seconds, the 200-meter dash in 26.58, and the 400-meter dash in 59.66.
She also claimed first place in the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 5.25 inches, qualifying for state in all four events.
Katelyn Brandhorst also had a strong showing, winning the 3,000-meter run in 11:35.88 and qualifying at-large in two additional events: the 800-meter run (3rd, 2:27.06) and the 1,500-meter run (2nd, 5:09.08).
Hannah Brandhorst earned an at-large bid in the 1,500-meter run with a second-place finish in 5:05.46, and joined Mila Grothus, Madelyn Grothus, and Katelyn Brandhorst on the 4×800-meter relay team, which placed second in 10:23.72 to qualify at-large.
The distance medley relay team of Kimee Smith, Jaela Hansen, Inna Howard, and Hannah Brandhorst also earned an at-large spot with a second-place finish.
The shuttle hurdle relay team of Iyla Fine, Adelyn White, Isabel Atkinson, and Ashlyn Burkhart placed third with a strong time of 1:10.22 to qualify at-large.
In the field events, Lauren Dvorak placed third in both the discus (115-00) and shot put (36-00.25), earning a at-large state qualifications.
Madrid won the meet with144 points, and Ackley-Geneva/Wellsburg-Steamboat Rock finished second with 98 points.

Madrid now sets its sights on the Iowa High School Track & Field Championships, scheduled for Thursday-Saturday, May 22–24, at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
