The Madrid boys’ track team won 2 relays and earned several at-large bids at the Class 1A state qualifying meet on Thursday, May 15, at Madrid.
The 4×200-meter relay team of Loken Velky, Jacob Farrell, Jake Sawyer, and Tyler Sonnenfeldt blazed to a first-place finish in 1:32.88, earning an automatic trip to the state championships.
Madrid’s 4×800-meter relay team of Blake Renze, Caleb Berberich, Henry Hudnall, and Toryn Severson also took first place, finishing in 8:41.56 to secure another state berth.
Several athletes earned at-large bids for state based on their strong performances.
The shuttle hurdle relay of Kinnick Grimm, Easton Halverson, Brody Buck, Will Atkinson finished 2nd in 1:02.89.
Three individuals placed third in their events.
Sonnenfeldt was 3rd in the 200-meter dash in 23.04, Brody Buck was 3rd in the high jump with his jump of 6 feet, and Maxwell Morgan was 3rd in the discus with his throw of 143-08.
Kinnick Grimm was 4th in the 400-meter hurdles in 57.74.
Preston Wicker was 4th in the shot put with his throw of 46-08.25 and Jevyn Severson was 5th in the shot with a throw of 46-05.25.
Madrid finished third in the team standings with 99 points, behind meet champion Adair-Casey/Guthrie Center, which scored 125 points.
The Tigers now prepare to compete at the Iowa High School Track & Field Championships, set for Thursday-Saturday, May 22–24, at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
