The Boone softball team powered past Newton, 14-5, Tuesday, June 10, in a non-conference road game.
Boone’s offense came out firing, scoring in each of the first five innings.
The Toreadors scored three runs in the first, four in the second, and added two more in the third to build a commanding lead.
They tacked on three in the fourth and two in the fifth to put the game out of reach.
Brooke Weisbrod led the charge collecting three hits, including a home run and a double, while scoring three times, driving in three runs, and swiping a base.
Carly Busch added a home run of her own, scoring three runs and driving in two.
Sydney Adams contributed two doubles and two RBIs, while Kaylee Kuehl and Avery Howie each doubled, scored twice, and drove in a run.
Claire Hardinger and Shannon Jenkins each added a hit and an RBI, and Halle Bailey chipped in with two hits, a run scored, and an RBI.
Weisbrod also earned the win in the circle, striking out three before handing the ball to Jenkins, who struck out three more in relief.
The win improved Boone’s overall record to 9-4.
Tough night against Carlisle
Boone faced a tough test against Class 4A, No. 7, Carlisle in a Raccoon River Conference doubleheader Monday, June 8, at home.
In Game 1, Boone fell 11-5 despite strong efforts from Mora Nystrom (2 hits, 2 RBIs, 1 double), Jenkins (2 hits, 1 RBI), and Busch (triple, 2 runs scored).
Busch pitched a complete game and struck out two.
Game 2 saw the Toreadors lose to the Wildcats, 8-0.
Weisbrod had two hits, and Hardinger added one.
Kuehl took the loss in the circle.
Boone now sits at 9-4 overall and 2-3 in conference play.
Tonight the Toreadors host Class 4A No. 2 North Polk (10-1, 4-0) at 7 p.m. at Gary Creasman Field.
