The Madrid softball team came up short in both games of a road doubleheader Thursday, May 29, against Earlham, falling 9-0 in the opener and narrowly losing 10-9 in a high-scoring second game.
Game 1 was all Earlham, as the Cardinals steadily built their lead with runs in four separate innings.
They scored once in the third, twice in both the fourth and fifth, and capped it off with a four-run seventh.
Game 2 was a different story, as the Tigers came out swinging.
Madrid jumped to a 5-3 lead after the first inning and added runs in each of the next three frames.
The Tigers entered the bottom of the fourth up 8-7, but Earlham responded with two runs to take the lead.
Madrid added one more in the seventh but couldn’t complete the comeback.
With the losses, Madrid falls to 1-3 on the season, while Earlham improves to 2-1.
The Tigers will look to bounce back tonight when they host Glidden-Ralston (1-0) at 7 p.m.
