The Madrid baseball team earned its first win of the season Thursday, May 29, splitting a doubleheader on the road against Earlham.
Madrid took the opener 2-1 before falling just short in a back-and-forth second game, 8-7.
In Game 1, Madrid’s offense came alive in the third inning, scoring both of its runs to erase an early 1-0 deficit.
Kole Deppe led the charge with two hits, an RBI, and a run scored.
Emerson Bridgewater also had two hits and crossed the plate once.
Deppe earned the win in relief, striking out four to help secure the victory.
Game 2 had both teams trading runs in the middle innings.
Madrid scored twice in the fourth and fifth innings and mounted a late rally with three runs in the seventh, but Earlham’s three-run sixth proved to be the difference.
Deppe continued his strong night with two more hits, an RBI, and a run scored.
Easton Halverson added two hits, an RBI, and scored twice.
Kolbie Owens and McCoy Cooley each contributed two hits and an RBI.
Owens took the loss on the mound, while Bridgewater struck out eight in relief.
With the split, Madrid moves to 1-2 on the season, while Earlham sits at 2-2.
The Tigers return home tonight to host Glidden-Ralston (2-1) at 7 p.m.
