The Madrid softball team opened its season on the road Tuesday, May 27, falling 4-1 to Woodward-Granger.
Woodward-Granger struck early with a run in the first inning, then added two more in the fifth and one in the sixth to build a lead Madrid couldn’t overcome.
The Tigers’ lone run came in the fifth inning, when Ashlyn Burkhart crossed the plate on an RBI from Samantha Springer.
Mayzie Surratt went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and two singles and pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts.
Madrid starts the season 0-1 and will look to bounce back quickly as it travels to Coon Rapids-Bayard (0-0) for a non-conference matchup tonight at 5:30 p.m.
