The Boone softball team opened its season Tuesday, May 27, at Gary Creasman Field, falling to Grinnell 14-4 in a five-inning contest.

Grinnell came out swinging, scoring four runs in the first inning and never looking back.

It added three more in the second, four in the fourth, and capped off its offensive surge with three in the fifth to seal the win in its season opener.

Boone scored one run in each of the first four innings.

Carly Busch led the Toreadors with two hits and an RBI, while Kaylee Kuehl, Brooke Weisbrod, Averie Howie, Shannon Jenkins, and Claire Hardinger each contributed a hit.

Weisbrod, Howie, and Hardinger also drove in a run apiece.

Busch was the starting pitcher for Boone, striking out two in 3 2/3 innings of work.

Jenkins came on in relief, recording one strikeout in 1 1/3 innings.

With the loss, the Toreadors start the season 0-1.

They’ll look to bounce back quickly as they hit the road tonight to face Ballard (1-0) in Raccoon River Conference play.

First pitch is set for 7 p.m. in Huxley.
