Paige Richards’ state title in the girls’ 100-meter dash and a top-five team finish in Class 1A were the highlights for the Madrid girls’ track team at the Iowa High School State Track and Field Championships on Saturday, May 24, at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
Paige Richards led the way for the Tigers, sprinting to a state championship in the 100-meter dash with a winning time of 12.06 seconds.
In addition, she was runner-up in the 200-meter dash, clocking in at 25.35 seconds.
In the distance events, Katelyn Brandhorst placed 11th in the 800 meters (2:23.25) and 13th in the 1500 meters (5:00.62), while Hannah Brandhorst finished 12th in the 1500 meters (4:59.27).
In the field events on Friday, May 23, Lauren Dvorak earned a fifth-place finish in the discus with a throw of 133 feet, 10 inches, while Brody Buck cleared 5’11” to finish 10th in the boys’ high jump.
Maxwell Morgan competed in the boys’ discus but fouled.
Madrid’s relay teams also competed Friday, May 23.
The girls distance medley relay team of Kimee Smith, Jalea Hansen, Inna Howard, and Hannah Brandhorst placed 17th with a time of 4:25.89.
On the boys’ side, the 4×200-meter relay team of Loken Velky, Jacob Farrell, Jake Sawyer, and Tyler Sonnenfelt finished 7th in 1:31.16.
Kinnick Grimm rounded out the Tigers’ efforts with a 20th-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles (59.27).
With a total of 31 points, the Madrid girls tied for 5th place in Class 1A with Maquoketa Valley.
