Paige Richards was runner-up in the long jump and qualified for the finals in both the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash for the Madrid girls’ track team Thursday, May 22, at the Iowa High School Track & Field Championships at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
Richards had an impressive 2nd place finish in the long jump, leaping 17 feet, 5.25 inches and finished the 400-meter dash 11th in 1:00.46.
Her time of 12.29 seconds in the 100 meters was the fastest in Class 1A, while her 25.45-second finish in the 200 meters also secured her a spot in Saturday’s finals.
In distance events, Katelyn Brandhorst placed 14th in the 3000-meter run with a time of 11:20.07 and later helped the girls 4×800-meter relay team to an 8th place finish (10:05.17), alongside teammates Hannah Brandhorst, Mila Grothus, and Madelyn Grothus.
The girls shuttle hurdle relay team (Iyla Fine, Adelyn White, Ashlyn Burkhart, Isabel Atkinson) placed 11th with a time of 1:10.97, while the boys team (Kinnick Grimm, Will Atkinson, Brody Buck, Easton Halverson) finished 19th in 1:04.60.
In the sprints, Tyler Sonnenfelt ran a 23.39 in the boys 200-meter dash, placing 22nd.
The boys 4×800-meter relay team—featuring Blake Renze, Caleb Berberich, Henry Hudnall, and Toryn Severson—was unfortunately disqualified.
Lauren Dvorak placed 22nd in the girls shot put (33-06.00), while Preston Wicker and Jevyn Severson finished 19th (43-09.75) and 14th (45-01.00) respectively in the boys shot put.
Madrid will continue competing in running and field events this afternoon and will compete in distance events and finals Saturday, May 24.
