The Boone girls’ tennis team had both doubles teams make the semifinals at the Class 1A Individual Regional Tournament Monday, May 12, in Denison.
However, both teams lost in the semis, and the Toreadors were not able to advance an entry to state.
“It was a satisfying yet disappointing day,” said head coach Shawn Latimer.
“Having the most players in the semifinals of any team was a great step in the right direction for the program,” he said.
In doubles, No. 3 seed Kaylee Kuehl and Livi Schneider defeated Alice Adam and Lauren Greving from Audubon, 6-3, 6-0, before beating Bella Lu and Kaia Neumann from Carroll Kuemper Catholic, 6-3. 6-0, to reach the semifinals.
Then they were defeated by the No. 2 seed Harley Askelsen and Payton Askelsen from Ballard, 4-6. 1-6.
No. 4 seed Shannon Jenkins and Claire Hardinger also reached the semifinals by defeating Anastacia Kay and Chloe Swenson from Harlan, 6-0, 6-2, before beating Maria Ernesti and Kate Kelly from Sioux City Bishop Heelan, 6-2, 6-4.
Then they lost to Sophie Tidgren and Charlotte Schwabe from Kuemper in a close match, 5-7, 7-6 (5), 0-1 (8-10).
“It was a heartbreaking loss for Shannon and Claire, being 2 points away from state, but they put up quite the battle against the No. 1 seed in the semifinals,” Latimer said.
Kuehl and Schneider secured third place by defeating Jenkins and Hardinger, 6-1, 6-0.
In singles, Juliana Lutz advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Natalie Patee from Sioux City Bishop Heelan, 6-2, 6-3.
However, she was defeated by No . 2 seed Naia Ojeda from Harlan in the quarterfinals, 0-6, 1-6.
