BOONE, Iowa—Funeral arrangements are planned for 92 year old Betty Jane (Carrier) Smith of Boone, Iowa. She died on Sunday, December 5, 2021 at her home with family by her side.
Betty was born on April 19, 1929, the daughter of Willis and Daisy Louise (Schleotzer) Carrier in Dubuque. She graduated from Guttenberg High School in 1946.
Betty was united in marriage with Walter Mohrman on February 12, 1949 in Dubuque. From this union, were two children, Robert and Nancy. The couple later separated.
Betty was later united in marriage with Hugh F. Smith on August 1, 1975 in Des Moines.
Betty worked at the Dubuque and Boone Telephone Companies as an operator from 1946 until 1955. For a few years, Betty worked at Bournes in Ames. She worked at the National Animal Disease Lab in Ames from 1964 until 1986, where she retired on August 1, 1986 after 22 years as a laboratory technician.
Betty loved to go dancing in her earlier years. She enjoyed watching Dancing with the Stars, Regis and Kelly, The View and movies. Betty was frugal and loved a good bargain from a garage sale, like brand new tennis shoes for 2 dollars! Betty was an avid sports fan. She enjoyed basketball most but followed the Iowa Hawkeyes Football. She often would call in to KWBG and win the Quiz Biz. She also enjoyed her morning coffee with her friends at HyVee each morning for many years, where politics may have been a point of conversation.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Walter Mohrman and Hugh F. Smith; grandson, Greg Mohrman; and brothers, Robert and Gene Carrier. She is survived by her son, Bob (Chery) Mohrman of Boone; daughter, Nancy Mohrman of Boone; grandson, Jeff Mohrman (fiancé, Stephanie Baugh); granddaughter-in-law, Kelly Mohrman; great grandchildren, Allyson, Tyler and Carly Mohrman; sisters-in-law, Mary Carrier of Guttenberg, IA and Carol Carrier of AZ; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 until 6:00 P.M. on Thursday, December 9, 2021 at the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall Streets in Boone.
