Darrell Hanel

BOONE, Iowa—Darrell Edward Hanel, 93, of Boone, Iowa passed away on Tuesday, October 26, 2021 at the Eastern Star Masonic Home in Boone. Before moving to Eastern Star, Darrell had previously been a resident at Independence Village in Ames since October of 2019.

Darrell was born on July 14, 1928 in Omaha, Nebraska, the son of Edward “Ben” and Wilda (Blakesly) Hanel. On February 11, 1951, Darrell married Jane Lee Johnstone at the First Presbyterian Church in Boone, Iowa. He graduated from Boone High School in 1947. After graduation Darrel attended The University of Iowa. He then began his career at Fareway, working alongside his father. Over his career at Fareway, Darrell worked to build up the trucking department. He retired from Fareway in 1995 as the warehouse manager. Darrell and Jane were lifelong members of the Boone Golf and Country Club. They enjoyed playing in golf tournaments around the country and enjoyed traveling with their family.

Darrell was preceded in death by his loving wife of 66 years, Jane Hanel; son Blake Hanel; and parents Ben and Wilda Hanel.

He is survived by his daughter Diane (Darin) Olofson, grandson Joel (Courtney) Davidson, granddaughter Baylee (JP) Webb, and two great-grandchildren: Madelyn and Samuel Davidson.

The family is planning a celebration of life. The date and time will be announced later.

Memorials may be directed to the family, which they will be donating to the Boone County Historical Society. Their donation will go towards rebuilding the Kate Shelley Museum, a project that Darrell’s great-grandson Sam is working on.
