BOONE, Iowa—The Boone County Sheriff’s Department has reported that two people were hospitalized following a head on collision on Highway 17 (S Avenue) on the northside of Madrid Tuesday afternoon. The release from Boone County says the Communications Center received a 911 call regarding a personal injury accident in the 2100 block of “S” Avenue. Multiple agencies responded, Boone County Sheriff’s Deputies, Madrid Police, Madrid Fire and Rescue, the Boone Fire Department as the third crew ambulance, the Iowa State Patrol as well as air ambulance from Mercy Hospital.
The investigation determined that a 2016 Kia Soul, operated by 19 year old Katherine Crook of Boone was traveling north on “S” Avenue, when she attempted to pass a vehicle that slowed to allow another vehicle to turn. When Crook’s vehicle entered the southbound lane, she collided head on with a vehicle operated by 78 year old Bertha Cerretti of Madrid. The report noted the the collision caused Crook’s vehicle to strike the vehicle she was passing which was operated by a 16 year old female from Boone.
Crook was taken by the Boone Fire Department third crew ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. Cerretti was transported by air ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. The juvenile female driver was uninjured. All three vehicles sustained disabling damage and were towed by Condon’s Service.
