joining us on coaches corner KWB G get a chance to wrap up the Ogden golf season head coach randy johnson joining us as the Bulldogs I tell you what I'm gonna start with the girls side randy because I know it'd be easy to talk about the the boys and then talk about the postseason but I kind of wanted to start with the girls just because I just saw such good improvement from meet one to we're really really close to seeing Olivia you know have a chance to move on to post season I guess that's the name of the game right coach I mean at the end of the season you want them to be playing their best golf at the best time at the right time and I thought the girls were right there yeah they uh we kind of eased into it you know we didn't peak too early and uh we had some senior trip we had a couple key players the Maddie and Lydia were out and once we got them back in and got things squared away they started to come together and they looked at the other teams coming in as hey we got a shot with these and the kids go to that and look up scores and stuff all the time to see where they're falling but I said gals when we play on a different course or your home course there's a more of an advantage than what shows on the numbers and uh we'd have had to play uh pretty good golf to advance which was not out of their hands I mean they were as well within reach but uh very proud for what they accomplished and I think you're going to be seeing a lot of Clara and Olivia's name next year and we've got three more eighth graders coming up this year that'll be ninth graders next year to help boost the team a little bit and it's going to be sad to see Maddie and Lydia go uh they kind of been right there for the whole program and they kind of know the ropes and stuff so um thanks look good for the girls we just got to keep building unlike the boys you know you've got the numbers to work with but the girls are uh you get your six seven eight girls and then do the best you can with them and see how far you can go well and I think another thing that we always see that happens to Randy is sometimes you get somebody who doesn't do anything in the spring and decides you know what I'm going to give golf a shot tell you what if there's uh you know a couple of those girls that are interested in doing something like that that that's where all of a sudden you get the numbers and then you get what we're going to talk about with the boys here in just a second which is competition I think the girls with a little bit of in competition and just that's not a bad thing Randy we want the competition it brings your best players to the top that's going to help that girls program I feel like next year yeah that's kind of the way I look at it is when we play practice rounds and stuff like that I always take uh some of the kids that are more experienced and put them with some of the kids that need to learn a little bit more and maybe pick up habits someone from one another most generally in golf um you'll see the girls they're uh they play their own fiddle you know they do their own thing they're not I'm going to go because something's going on I'm going to do that because she's going to do it you'd like to see the independence in golf and if we can get that and driven into them and what they can do um that's three quarters of the battle and especially you know voice also having them going out and playing the extra rounds and playing the courses that's upcoming in the schedule is crucial in promoting that so that's that's kind of the way I look at it and that's how you get better well on the boys side of things obviously uh jace Coleman with uh just a really great end to the season and finishing uh tied for 13th at the district meet and uh down in Shenandoah I know you and I talked about that already down in Shenandoah but I just thought jace had such a strong season it was nice to see him be rewarded uh with some post-season experience yeah it was good I mean his attitude uh when we had our meets and stuff that uh some of the uh the deacons or the hunters or the keegans or colson any one of those four come up and challenge for the top spot you didn't see him uh miss a beat I mean that was good for the team and if he could put three 38th and a 39 in there that's that's what we needed and his attitude towards it uh him looking at the big picture is what you need and he didn't rattle on that and we went from meet to meet and sometimes it would be deacon step up and sometimes it'd be hunter and and uh colson Carson you know for a first-year player coming out um that's what we need to push the bimbos and the uh colmans and that uh made us a really good tough team in many tournaments we played to share well and that was the thing that I kind of noticed too when you talk about what you guys were able to do I mean gosh you guys got out of the shoot pretty darn well and let's be honest April's not always the most fun to play golf uh Randy and I thought the boys just right out of the shoot I mean you had a uh a home triangular victory I know against some west central activities opponents and you won another home quad I think it was in May as well I mean you guys got out of the shoot pretty strong I thought on the boys side yeah and and there again we had uh the senior trip right and every meet scheduled for the senior trip week was canceled or moved to another week maybe there was a reason for that I mean you look at it and uh here come the senior boys back and uh and they got a chance to play all those meets so kind of way the the senior should go out if they really want to play the game uh to give them a chance to excel and every meet there was and there was a couple weeks there we were a meet every night and sometimes meets in different directions but that's just the way it goes and that's just the way the scheduling worked and uh they had their opportunities you know and to battle in different scenarios and things that we fought through and and uh it was a very enjoyable season to watch these kids go like that so yeah and they didn't I mean I brought up some of the quads but I also know they won at southeast valley won that invitation and then uh south hamilton tournament that was pretty strongly contested uh got a w there so I mean ran you want to talk about boys kind of walking away from the golf season into either their summer season or their off season man if that doesn't want to make you jump back on the course be surprised yeah I mean two we knew that'd be the competition at sectionals would be the south ham and rolling the story at south ham and uh for us to place and do well there it all come down to us be able to play story city well and uh I think it was within reach but uh south hamilton's got a kid there the their number one he's a he's a player and uh I think he missed going to state by one stroke I believe or the team missed by going by one stroke but they were right there at the end also so you've got to be able to adapt going to different courses and adjust the green speed and that's what I'm doing to this day when I do my traveling legs you got to be able to adjust yeah I really do very much so well we're going to wrap things up with Randy we're also going to wrap up a career because coach told me a couple weeks ago he said I'm going to go play golf and not maybe have to teach as much during the week and so Randy first off congratulations uh you know I hate seeing when my coaches leave but when they give me these really good reasons why they're leaving darn it I have to say okay fine I won't give you too much grief although I did say I would continue to do that every now and with a text message but uh Randy thank you so much for all the times all the scores all the stuff and just what you've been able to do for Ogden Golf uh just so many cool memories I wasn't going to make you pick any top ones because I feel like I know what your top memory would be and that's just your time on the course with the girls and the guys um probably the top memory is um watching the kids develop you know 10 15 years after they've got done playing golf with you they come up to yo's um with a smile on their face and bring back a memory that they uh they hold to them you know and that kind of triggers it for me and um I've got a lot of good memories and that's that's what I'll keep us me and that's how I'll end um coaching but uh it'll probably never end you know because I I do enjoy working with younger kids and watching them develop and uh I'll let Harry go with it now and I think you'll do a very good job and he can always call me for assistance or he needs something but uh I've got other responsibilities that I have to step up and do and uh and I think it's time to do that I've got a feeling though Randy if you're out on the course and you see one of the high schoolers that's maybe struggling with a swing why do I feel like you still might give a little two cents worth of advice well I would do that and I and then I hope nobody feels like they don't have to come up to me and ask or something because I kind of like to break it down what we'd like to see what we'd like to do and and that's what Harry and I like to do we'll watch kids swing and stuff and we'll look at each other and talk it over and and um go from there and sometimes you got to get that habit right away taken care of otherwise they carry that habit throughout the whole golf season so the earlier we can get it corrected and stay on top of it the better it is um you know 60 70 percent of the time it's going to work and the other 20 30 percent you'll see them you know a week later and they're right back to doing the same thing and just have to refresh them but the kids that want to make the change uh usually develop quite well and there's so much stuff out there on golf right now little tidbits that you can pick up and improve your game if you want to and the kids that want to are the ones we're handing medals to so that's um the nice thing about it you know there's many different ways to coach unlike when I started um you helped me through the food first coach his corner and uh it was kind of it was interesting and uh and I jumped right into it and I had about two weeks notice had around Iowa City and get my coaching certificate and I came back and started coaching the next week so just the love of the game you know and I'm helping kids along and seeing that improvement it worked out it worked out just fine Randy again thank you so much for all the time thanks for all the coaches corners all the scores we'll talk again real soon all right thanks for any you've got Randy Johnson then joining us Ogden golf here on coaches corner
