MADRID, Iowa—Funeral arrangements are set for 93 year old Donald Phipps of Madrid, Iowa. He passed away Saturday, January 16, 2021, at the Madrid Home in Madrid, Iowa.

Friends may call from 11:00 A.M. until 1:30 P.M., Saturday, January 23, 2021, at the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall Streets in Boone.  Private graveside services will be held at Mineral Ridge Cemetery in Ridgeport.

Donald Hugh Phipps was born near Polk City, Iowa, on April 18, 1927, to Hugh and Charlotte (Adams) Phipps.  He attended school in Boone County.  Don bought his first truck when he was a teenager and worked on road building projects in Iowa.

Don served in the United States Marines Corps, during World War II.  After he was honorably discharged, he returned to Iowa and again took up trucking.

Don was united in marriage to Marlys Westgate on March 7, 1958, in Los Angeles, California.  He sold trucks for a few years for International Harvester. Don then started his own trucking company, where he had several million safe-driving miles.  He served as president of the Iowa Independent Drivers Association for several years.  Don was on the Board of Directors for the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association for many years.  When he stepped down from that position, the OOIDA appointed Don as “Board Member Emeritus”.

After retiring, Don enjoyed traveling with Marlys in their RV, fishing and driving trucks for others. Don was a member of Heartland Baptist Church in Ames, the American Legion Post 37 of Ames and the OOIDA. Don’s family was very special to him.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marlys; brother, Dean; and sister, Doris. He is survived by his son, Harold (Dawn) Phipps of Polk City; daughter, Janine (Jon) Seibert of Fort Myers, Florida; granddaughter, Cortney (Jimmy) Edwards of Kansas City, Missouri; grandson, Colin (Samantha) Seibert & great grandson Miles of Chicago, Illinois; step grandson, Andy (Brookly) Gerleman, & great granddaughters Harmony, Ava & Zoe of Des Moines; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall Streets in Boone.
