DAYTON, Iowa—Authorities Wednesday updated some of the information they’ve been releasing to the public about their search for a missing 15-year old Dayton, Iowa girl. Wednesday, a new picture was released of Kathlynn Shepard as she’s getting of her school bus in Dayton. One of the noticable items is the cap, originally described as being a Minnesota Vikings cap but is apparently and Iowa Cubs cap. Another big matter was the discovery of items from Shepard and the unidentified 12-year old girl taken with her. Backpacks and a purse were found in Boone County on Kale Road north of Fraser. Boone County began search the area Tuesday when the evidence was discovered and continued Wednesday. Authorities also continued to search other prime sites.

BOONE, Iowa—The Boone City Council Monday approved having City Administrator Luke Nelson present a plan to the Boone County Supervisors to include some additional paving on Quartz Avenue north of the Industrial Park Road. Nelson explained to the Council this week that the city had budgeted $640,000 for it’s share of the paving project. The amount taken from the engineer’s estimate. The actual bid for the city’s share was $470,000. Nelson told the Council that consideration on additional paving was based on a couple of factors that included extremely low interest rates received on the city’s bond sale that included the paving project and the extremely low bid from the contractor. Nelson also noted that the bond proceeds being used for the work are being repaid through Tax Increment Finance proceeds from the Industrial Park, so it would be appropriate to consider additional infrastructure improvements. Nelson meets with the Supervisors Wednesday to discuss the proposal.

DAYTON, Iowa—Authorities continue to search for a missing 15-year old Dayton girl Tuesday, in Webster, Boone and Hamilton Counties. Kathlynn Shepard has been missing since Monday afternoon when she and an unidentified 12-year old girl were picked up at a school bus drop off. Both were driven to an agricultural facility southeast of Dayton where the 12-year old managed to escape and run to a farm house in extreme northern Boone County. The initial call came into the Boone County Communications Center and Webster County was notified. Monday evening, authorities recovered a Red, Toyota Tundra pickup and found the driver, forty-two year old Michael J. Klunder in a rural area northeast of Dayton. Klunder was deceased, and the cause of death remains under investigation. Authorities are concentrating their search for Kathlynn Shepard in an area about 75 to 100 miles square. Authorities says additional volunteers are not needed at this time, but may be needed in the future. For those that are interested, Webster County Emergency Management is facilitating volunteers and may be reached at 515-571-6483.

BOONE, Iowa—It didn’t take very long, even without knowing what the legislature was going to do for funding to schools, the Boone School Board voted last week to approve the negotiated agreement with the Boone Education association. Superintendent Brad Manard says the two sides met initially and the proposal from the Association was about what the District was going to propose so they came together quickly. The overall package increase for the Association is 3.52%.

Negotiations are still continuing with the support staff’s contract. The support staff is represented by UE, Iowa United Professionals. Their initial contract proposal was made April 30th. Since then, meetings have been held in closed session. The support staff is now faced with the proposed reduction in hours to avoid forcing the district to provide health insurance coverage, even that the majority don’t seem interested in taking the school district’s health insurance coverage.

BOONE, Iowa—Last year, it was literally days before school let out for the summer and a group from the First United Methodist Church were determined to make free lunches available to any child that wanted one. Things came together, volunteers stepped up and quite a few people were served meals, but they want to do better. Barb Veal and Mary Wirtz were on the KWBG “Tuned In” program Monday and said they are more organized this year. They’ve already begun sending notices home with children and have a number of churches and individuals lined up to help. Their plan is to begin serving a lunch on Monday, June 3rd and to keep serving those lunches every Monday thru Friday until August 14th when school starts again. The only day off would be on the 4th of July.

Wirtz says the meals are not extravagant, but are nutritious and this year, they plan to add more variety. Veal says the meals will be served at four locations beginning June 3rd, the American Legion Cabin at 1928 Boone Street, the Open Bible Church at 1224 Hancock Drive, Crawford Hall at 107 State Street and at the First United Methodist Church at 703 Arden Street. The locations were selected because of handicap accessibility. Children can get rides to the serving locations. Parents can contact Boone County Transportation at 432-5038. United Way of Boone County has provided additional funding of more than $1,700 to Boone County Transportation to support the rides.

Veal says if any individual wants to volunteer to help or any group wants to volunteer, they can begin by contacting the First United Methodist Church at 432-4660. More comments from Veal and Wirtz can be heard here.

OGDEN, Iowa—A single vehicle roll over, northeast of Ogden near the Des Moines River sent four-people to the hospital Thursday night. Information from the Boone County Sheriff’s Department indicates that the Boone County Communication Center received a call shortly before 8:00 PM, from a person who had rolled their vehicle on “J” Avenue and another person was pinned beneath the vehicle. Ogden Police, Ogden First Responders, Ogden Fire Department and the Boone Fire Department on a mutual aid call were at the scene with Boone County Ambulance. According to the report, the driver of the vehicle was Leah Habrich of Ogden. Habrich lost control on a curve in the road on “J” Avenue just north of 200th Street and rolled into the ditch. Her passenger, Kyle Habrich was thrown from the vehicle and was pinned under the car. Two other passengers, children who were not identified by the Sheriff’s Department, were not injured. The report says that Leah Habrich was treated for a possible broken arm. She was cited with failure to maintain control.

BOONE, Iowa—An early morning house fire in Boone has damaged the Lighthouse, a residential shelter for Youth and Shelter Services. Emergency responders were on the scene and had blocked off and diverted traffic around the fire location at Mamie Eisenhower Avenue and Benton Street shortly after receiving the alarm about 3:40 AM Friday. The home serves as a shelter for young women and their families and had only one resident at home at the time of this mornings fire. Fire Chief Justin Adams says fire fighters attacked the fire aggressively and were able to locate the 17-year old victim within five or six minutes of arriving at the scene. Adams said Nyakuoth Chuol was found in the kitchen and was quickly removed from the house and taken by ambulance to the Boone County Hospital. Her body has been sent to Ankeny to the State Medical Examiners office for autopsy. Adams said the alarms system worked as it was supposed to and a passerby also saw flames and called 911. He said anytime a life is lost, fire fighters wonder what else they might have done to save that life.

George Belitsos, Chief Executive Officer of Youth and Shelter Services, owner of the Lighthouse, said they were shocked and saddened by the death of a client. Belitsos says several staff members took the loss very hard. He says it’s the first time in the 37 year history of YSS that a client has lost their life while participating in a YSS program. Belitsos says YSS is accepting contributions to cover the expense of funeral services for Chuol. He says the easiest way will be to donate through the website and identify that the donation should be used for the funeral service. Belitsos also says donations are being accepted for a second young woman, who with her 2-year old child were not at the shelter. However, all their possessions are considered a loss. He says YSS will relocated the young lady to an Ames residence, but will also accept assistance for her and her child. Because she is still a client, she is unidentified. Locally, Red Rock is helping to collect items for the young lady and her child. Kum and Go in downtown Boone is helping with the collection.

The Boone Fire Department is working with the State Fire Marshall’s Office to determine a cause for the fire.

BOONE, Iowa—Two weeks ago, a late season snow storm and continuing rain caused organizers to postpone the annual Johnny Appleseed tree planting in Boone. The rain date was set for this Saturday, May 18th and after some warm temperatures and wind, planting locations have dried nicely. John Murphy, Boone Park Commission, said volunteers will gather at Herman Park Pavilion at 8:00 AM Saturday. Just over 100-trees will be planted or replanted this spring and it’s not expected to take very long with a good contingent of volunteers. The biggest share of the work will be in the Boone Business Park, where 80-trees will be planted. Over 30-will be replanted, mostly along Hancock Drive. Since 1984, more than 9,300 trees have been planted in Boone. Murphy says volunteers just need to show up. Any bringing any equipment should make sure it’s properly marked for identification.

BOONE, Iowa—Postal carriers from the Boone Post office did well last Saturday with the annual “Stamp Out Hunger” food collection. Carriers were able to bring nearly 4,300 pounds of non-perishable food items to local food pantries. The spring time food collection is beneficial because it’s the time of the year when students are done with school for the summer and the need for assistance increases. Food donations are usually good during the holidays, Thanksgiving and Christmas, but tend to slack off during the spring. The “Stamp Out Hunger” food collection event is held nationwide the second Saturday in May.

BOONE, Iowa—The Boone Area Humane Society Board of Directors has selected their new shelter manager. Board members Gretchen Stark and Kio Dettman were on the KWBG News Public Affairs Program “Tuned In” Thursday and reported that the board had offered and Dr. Kim Houlding had accepted to position as shelter manager. Houlding is a practicing veterinarian but has recently closed her Madrid practice. She is still associated with a practice in Ames. Houlding is also a former BAHS Board member. Stark said during the program that Houlding brings a familiar background to the position. Stark also announced that Pat Ames, a former board member and long time volunteer was offered the position of assistant shelter manager and did accept the offer. Both Houlding and Ames are completing orientation and will be taking over their positions the first of June. Rhonda Maas will continue as Lead Animal Control Officer. The KWBG News Public Affairs Program “Tuned In” with Stark and Dettman is available here.
