News Headlines BOONE, Iowa---The Boone City Council moved ahead with plans to borrow more than $12-million during their meeting Monday. Public hearings were held to borrow more than $9-million for sanitary sewer work and $3-million for water distribution improvements. Funds will be borrow from the State of Iowa’s revolving loan program. The City has pursued borrowing from the state because of lower interest. BOONE, Iowa---A number of Boone County businesses were recognized this week for efforts to reduce and recycle workplace waste. Boone County Landfill Administrator and Recycling Coordinator Scott Smith says 130-businesses were recognized this year, up from 100-in 2007. Smith noted that when the program started in 1999, there were only 16-businesses that received recognition. From the Associated Press: CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) - An investigation is under way into a deadly apartment house fire in Cedar Rapids. Authorities say firefighters pulled an elderly man out of the second floor of the burning building late last night. He later died at the hospital. Eleven other people escaped, and no one else was hurt. POSTVILLE, Iowa (AP) - The Agriprocessors kosher meatpacking plant in Postville has suspended production -- at least temporarily. The plant was the site of an immigration raid in May where 400 workers were arrested. DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A former assistant Pottawattamie County attorney has pleaded guilty to a federal weapons charge. Jeffrey Tekippe entered his plea yesterday to one count of possession of stolen firearms. He faces up to two years in prison under a plea agreement. DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Iowa's harvest is still behind schedule. State Agriculture Secretary Bill Northey says the cold, wet weather is to blame, but hopefully conditions will improve so farmers can finish the job. SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) - A Sioux City man has been sentenced to life in prison on charges related to crack cocaine sales. The U.S. Attorney's Office announced on Monday that Emerson "Turk" Jackson was sentenced to life in prison on Nov. 10. In July, a jury found Jackson guilty of conspiracy to distribute crack cocaine, three counts of distributing crack cocaine and one count of aiding and abetting another in the distribution of crack cocaine. DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A Clive hand model and magician is suing Kmart and Martha Stewart Living after a lounge chair sold by the store under the Martha Stewart Everyday brand collapsed on his hand, cutting off a fingertip. In the lawsuit filed Monday, Patrick Albanese, who is also an actor, says he was moving the lounge chair in June when the front legs collapsed, crushing his right index finger between a chair leg and the chair.
