BOONE, Iowa—The Boone City Council’s Economic Development Committee has considered yet another application to participate in the city’s Downtown Incentive Fund. The most recent application was made by the Boone Elks Committee for work on the former News Republican Building on Keeler Street. The application focused on exterior restoration. The Committee did not move forward with the application due to questions about the Elks being a non-profit, tax exempt entity. The most recent application to be denied came from the Salvation Army and prior to the that, the Historical Society for the History Center facade project.
In the meantime, the committee and city staff are awaiting update quotes for work planned at Modern Dress, a previous applicant. The updated quotes will give the committee and staff a better idea about the size of a possible reimbursement required.
Additional funds for the Downtown Incentive Fund were included in the budget for the next fiscal year, but will not be available until the first of July. The committee also intends to review the criteria and guidelines used for the program prior to the beginning of the new fiscal year.
