JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Cardinals right-hander Alex Reyes will undergo Tommy John surgery as early as today, ending his 2017 season before it begins. The 22-year-old Reyes was 4-1 with a 1.57 ERA for the 2016 Cardinals after making his major league debut Aug. 9. He had been a candidate for the final spot in the starting rotation.
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony has been added to the Eastern Conference All-Star team for Sunday’s game at New Orleans. It’s the 10th All-Star nod for Anthony, who will replace the injured Kevin Love of Cleveland. Only LeBron James has been selected to more All-Star games than Anthony among active players.
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Philadelphia center Joel Embiid (joh-EHL’ ehm-BEED’) will not participate in the Rising Stars Challenge or the Skills Challenge at NBA All-Star weekend in New Orleans. Embiid has not played since Jan. 20 because of an injured left knee. Oklahoma City’s Alex Abrines (ah-BREE’-nehs) will replace Embiid in the rising stars game, and Denver’s Nikola Jokic (nih-KOH’-lah YOH’-kihch) will take Embiid’s spot in the Skills Challenge.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Florida center John Egbunu (ehg-BUH’-noo) will miss the remainder of the season after tearing the ACL in his left knee during last night’s win at Auburn. Kevarrius Hayes is expected to replace the 6-foot-11 Nigerian, who was averaging 7.8 points and a team-high 6.6 rebounds this season. The school says the recovery time is projected at 10 to 12 months.
UNDATED (AP) — Detroit Red Wings forward Gustav Nyquist has received a six-game suspension without pay from the NHL for high-sticking Minnesota Wild defenseman Jared Spurgeon in the face during Sunday’s game. Nyquist was called for a double-minor for high-sticking after using the blade of his stick to spear Spurgeon just below his left eye. Anaheim’s Antoine Vermette (vur-MET’) is facing a suspension of at least 10 games after slashing a game official in Tuesday’s win over Minnesota.
