Posted on 10 January 2017 by KWBG

BOONE, Iowa—The Boone City Council will hold a Special Meeting Tuesday evening at the boone city hall.  This meeting was planned to be a time for the council to consider the applications received for the annual distribution of Hotel-Motel Tax proceeds.  Staff has estimated that receipts in the next fiscal year will be similar to the current year at $145,000.  Ten (10) applications have been received, seeking $168,000.

New applications have been received from Boone Farmer’s Market, Boone Action Association and the Salvation Army.  Both the Boone County Agricultural Association and the Boone County Family YMCA have submitted applications for the first time in a couple of years.

Applications have been received from the Convention and Visitors Bureau, Boone County Economic Development, Boone County Historical Society, Boone Parks Foundation and Seven Oaks Ski Patrol.  The largest requests usually come from Convention and Visitors Bureau and Boone County Economic Development over $70,000 and $35,000 respectively.  The Council has traditionally set aside money to be used for the 4th of July fireworks display.

State code does place limitations on how Hotel-Motel Taxes can be spent.

The Council has also scheduled a budget review of the proposed budget for the Ericson Public Library for Fiscal year ’18.  The proposed budget is over $772,000 and shows increases in several line items.  The budget calls for setting aside $35,000 for a planned roofing project in the next couple of years.

These are very incorrect numbers for the library’s budget, which has now been cut 10% from this special meeting.
