Habitat Breaks Ground on 26th Home

Posted on 18 April 2016 by KWBG

BOONE, Iowa—The Heart of Iowa Habitat for Humanity hosted a formal ground breaking ceremony Sunday for the next home to be constructed.  The James and Nyarok Kouk family are the partner family.  The Kouk’s and their children, Nyarawon, Jal, Chatim and Rielcole will fulfill their dream of building and purchasing a safe, decent and affordable home.  The family of eight currently lives together in a small three bedroom apartment, sharing one bathroom.  The Kouk family immigrated to the United States from war-torn South Sudan eleven years ago, settling first in Portland, Maine, them relocating to Boone in early 2014.

Once construction is completed, the family will begin a no-interest mortgage with the local Habitat for Humanity affiliate.

Bob Dennis of Boone will be leading his third Habitat House as Project Manager.  This will be the 26th partner family assisted with a new or renovated home through Habitat for Humanity since it’s beginning in 1995.  The Helping Hands repair program has assisted another 23 families with critical home repairs since 2012 across Boone, Greene and Guthrie Counties.
