Streetcar Historian Featured at Museum Saturday

BOONE, Iowa—The James H. Andrew Railroad Museum and History Center at the Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad will continue with the third presenter in this years’ line up. This month the museum hosts Des Moines and Midwest Streetcar historian Earl Short and his free program The Des Moines Streetcar Era. His presentation will be in the museum Saturday, March 19th at 2 pm.

Earl Short was born in Des Moines in 1938 during the streetcar era. He is the son of a motorman for the Des Moines Railway Company who worked from 1923 until his retirement in 1961. Earl started collecting old streetcar photos and met with anyone who had knowledge or interest in the era. With his large collection of photos, maps, and articles pertaining to this time frame (1866-1951) he created many presentations of different Des Moines area streetcars. Earl founded the Des Moines Streetcar Friends group.
