County Continues to Monitor Status of Wagon Wheel Bridge

Posted on 23 February 2016 by KWBG

BOONE, Iowa—Boone County Supervisors are well aware of the extent of damage an ice jam caused to the historic Wagon Wheel Bridge over the Des Moines River west of Boone.  The bridge had been closed to vehicular traffic for nearly six years.  At that time, and engineering review of Boone County bridges, determined it could handle the weight of cars and trucks.  Right after that, a large tree hit the structure during a spring flood and caused additional damage.  Last year, a fire destroyed a portion of the bridge on the Logansport side of the river.  The large ice jam Monday morning caused additional damage to the bridge before it broke free.
