LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jake Arrieta (ehr-ee-ET’-uh) tossed the sixth no-hitter in the majors this season and the Chicago Cubs ended a four-game slide by beating the L.A. Dodgers 2-0 as he improved to 17-6. Arrieta struck out a season-high 12, including all three Dodgers in the ninth inning. Kris Bryant’s first inning home run produced all the scoring.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP)— Matt Carpenter, Brandon Moss and Mark Reynolds all hit home runs, Yadier Molina drove in two and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the San Francisco Giants 7-5. Jason Heyward added three hits and drove in a run for the NL Central-leading Cardinals, who’ve won seven of eight.

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) — The international team from Japan pounded out 22 hits and won the Little League World Championship. In the title game Tokyo defeated Lewisberry, Pennsylvania, 18-11. The Kitasuna Little League team, also the winner in 2001 and 2012, gave Japan its 10th title.

EDISON, N.J. (AP) — Jason Day powered and putted his way to another blowout against a world-class field Sunday at The Barclays. Fresh off his first major at the PGA Championship, Day pulled away during an 8-under 62 for a six-shot victory over Henrik Stenson.

NEW YORK (AP)— The U.S. Open begins its two-week run today in New York in the final Grand Slam event of the tennis season. Serena Williams, who is chasing the first Grand Slam since Steffi Graf turned the trick by winning all four major championship in 1988, opens tonight against Vitalia Diatchenko (vih-TAHL’-ee-uh dee-aht-CHEHN’-koh) of Russia.
