WASHINGTON (AP) — Stephen Strasburg went a season-high eight innings, allowing three hits as the Washington Nationals won their eighth in a row, 8-1. Ian Desmond drove in four runs. The Nationals have outscored teams 42-21 during their eight-game streak.
PITTSBURGH (AP)— Atlanta won its fifth in a row, but remained six games back of Washington in the NL East. Justin Upton hit his 24th homer in the Braves’ 11-3 rout of Pittsburgh, spoiling the return of All-Star Andrew McCutchen’s return to the Pirates lineup after missing two weeks with fractured cartilage in his ribs. He went 0-for-4.
ST. LOUIS (AP)— St. Louis won for the sixth time in seven games by rallying past Cincinnati 5-4. Jon Jay was hit by a J.J. Hoover pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth for the winning run. The Reds have lost seven of eight.
BOSTON (AP) — Chris Iannetta (eye-uh-NET’-uh) hit his second double of the game, a tiebreaking hit in the ninth inning that sent the Los Angeles Angels over Boston 4-3. David Ortiz hit his 29th homer, a solo shot for Boston that increased his major league-leading total to 91 RBIs.
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) —The Ohio State Buckeyes likely will go with redshirt freshman J.T. Barrett as their quarterback in their Aug. 30 season opener against Navy in Baltimore. That’s because Braxton Miller, the two-time Big Ten player of the year, is out for the season after re-injuring his throwing shoulder in an injury that will require surgery.
