UNDATED, Iowa—Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) students can now check their grades and even register for classes on their smart phones or e-tablets. DMACC has just launched a new mobile app, available free through Google Play for Android devices and through the App Store for iPhones.
DMACC Information Solutions Executive Director Mark Clark said the DMACC mobile app is designed to help students, prospective students, faculty, staff and others stay connected with DMACC wherever they are.
A recent survey of college students ages 18 to 34 by re:fuel revealed that students own up to seven tech devices each. With 86 percent of the market, the laptop computer is number one, followed by the smartphone at 70 percent and growing.
“Current and perspective students have higher expectations today and we are striving to meet that need with digital solutions,” said Clark.
“The new DMACC app is a wonderful resource for today’s electronically-connected student,” said DMACC Web Development Coordinator Vicki Voogt. “It offers a customized design with features and functions that allow us to provide more complete customer service to students 24 hours a day.”
Some of the functions for current students include:
- See Current and Final Grades
- Look Up Classes
- Check on Holds and Restrictions
- View Your Daily Class Schedule
- Look at Account Summary
- Register for Classes
- View Your Transcript
When the mobile app was being tested, DMACC Administration Applications Support Supervisor Linda Fiderlick said DMACC President (Rob Denson) came up with ideas to make the app more student-friendly.
“One example is that President Denson suggested that if a student had their account on hold, based on what type of hold they have, they would be directed to the correct DMACC staff member to resolve the matter and not some general public number,” said Fiderlick.
For prospective students, the new DMACC mobile app has features to help them get acquainted with the College:
- Learn More about DMACC
- Check Out Academic Courses and Programs
- Learn About the University-College Transfer Program
- Find Out About Financial Aid
- View Maps of Each Campus or Center
- Schedule a Visit or Take a Virtual Tour
- Check College News & Events
- Look Up Athletic Events and Scores
- View DMACC Phone Directory
“The DMACC mobile app is also useful for the parents of prospective students or others who are interested in Iowa’s largest community college,” said Fiderlick. .
She said the DMACC mobile app will continually be improved and modified to enhance services provided by the College. She said the next phase will include employee leave forms and time sheets as well as a new feature that encourages students to update their emergency contact information.
