HOYLAKE, England (AP) — The first round of the British Open is underway and Tiger Woods has opened with a 3-under 69. He is three shots back of early leader Rory McIlroy. For Woods it was quite a round as he started with back-to-back bogeys before finishing with six birdies and another bogey over the final 16 holes.

SYLVANIA, Ohio (AP) — The LPGA Tour is in Ohio for the start today of the Marathon Classic. It’s a strong field with Women’s British Open champ Mo Martin, World No. 1 Stacy Lewis, Suzann Pettersen, Lexi Thompson and Michele Wie (wee) all in the field.

CLEVELAND (AP) — You might start calling the Cleveland Cavaliers the Cleveland Heat. Just days after signing LeBron James they worked out a deal with former Heat player Mike Miller, and now they have come to terms with fellow Miami alum James Jones. Both Miller and Jones are veterans who can hit the outside shot, which can take some heat off of James as he does his thing.

BOURG-EN-BRESSE, France (AP) — The 12th stage of the Tour de France is underway. Italian rider Vincenzo Nibali continues to wear the yellow jersey, symbolic of being the overall race leader. He started the day with a 2-minute, 23-second lead over Australian rider Richie Porte.

NEW YORK (AP) — Never under estimate the value of a good story. Tuesday night’s All-Star game drew good ratings as Derek Jeter made his final All-Star appearance. The American League’s 5-3 win in Minneapolis averaged more than 11.3 million viewers on Fox, up from 11 million for last year’s game at the Mets’ Citi Field in New York.
