BOONE, Iowa—Turn out was called great and Mother Nature was kind enough to hold off on any storms during the 23rd Iowa Municipal Band Festival at the Herman Park Pavilion on Boone on Saturday. This years concert featured eight bands, which Boone Municipal Band Director Dave Richardson call a comfortable number of bands. This year it just happened to include the National Community Band which gathered in Ames at Iowa State University for their annual concert. A year ago, musicians traveled to Boston and New Orleans the year before that. Musicians from 26-states participated and this year, the Iowa State event just happened to coincide with the Iowa Municipal Band Festival.
The National Community Band is an adult band of 85 musicians from across the country. The conductor will be John Bourgeois, Director Emeritus of the U.S. Marine Band, “The President’s Own.” Colonel Bourgeois served from 1979-1996 as the 25th conductor of the Marine Band, and entered the band in 1959 as a French hornist. He has appeared at the White House more than any other musician in history.
Only two bands have participated in all 23 festivals. The Ames and Boone Municipal Bands.
