The U.S. finished second in Group G despite yesterday’s 1-0 loss to Germany, and the Belgians beat South Korea 1-0 yesterday to finish 3-0 in group play. The Americans actually advanced with Portugal’s 2-1 win over Ghana.

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — FIFA (FEE’-fuh) has banned Uruguay’s Luis Suarez for four months and fined him $112,000 for biting an opponent at the World Cup. Suarez also will be suspended for Uruguay’s next nine games and won’t be able to compete for the first two months of Liverpool’s upcoming season. The action comes two days after the striker chomped down on the shoulder of Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini in the late stages of Uruguay’s 1-0 win.

LONDON (AP) — Men’s top seed Novak Djokovic (JOH’-koh-vihch), third seed Andy Murray and No. 6 Tomas Berdych (bur-DEECH’) play their third-round matches at Wimbledon today. The women’s schedule includes third-round matches for second seed Li Na (lee-nah), third seed Simona Halep (HAH’-lehp) and No. 4 Agnieszka Radwanska (ag-nee-EH’-skah rahd-WAHN’-skah) . Yesterday’s second-round winners included Rafael Nadal (nah-DAHL’), Roger Federer and No. 5 Stan Wawrinka (vahv-REEN’-kah), along with Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova and Angelique Kerber.

BETHESDA, Md. (AP) — Tiger Woods is in danger of missing the cut after carding a 3-under 74 in the first round of the PGA’s Quicken Loans National at Congressional near Washington. Woods carded seven bogeys and four birdies for a 3-over 74 in his first competitive round since undergoing back surgery three months ago. The leader is Greg Chalmers, who shot a 5-under 66 for a one-shot lead over Ricky Barnes and Freddie Jacobson.
