CLEVELAND (AP) — The Browns have agreed to terms with quarterback Johnny Manziel (man-ZEHL’) on his rookie contract. The Browns moved up in May’s NFL draft to select the former 2012 Heisman Trophy winner with the 22nd overall pick. Manziel went 20-6 in two seasons at A&M, where he earned the nickname “Johnny Football.”
RENTON, Wash. (AP) — Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch was in attendance when the Super Bowl champions opened their mandatory three-day minicamp yesterday. Reports surfaced last week that Lynch might consider not attending the practices in hopes of getting a higher salary for the 2014 season. Lynch signed a four-year contract before the 2012 season and is scheduled to make $5 million in base salary this year plus per game roster bonuses.
BOSTON — The Boston Red Sox have designated outfielder Grady Sizemore for assignment after his average dropped to .216 with two homers and 15 RBIs in 52 games. He made the All-Star team three times with the Cleveland Indians then had seven operations since 2009, including surgery on both knees, his back and elbow. Sizemore belted a career-high 33 points in 2008, but his slugging average this season is just .324.
NEW YORK (AP) — Rockies pitcher Nick Masset has been suspended three games and fined for throwing a pitch at Braves catcher Evan Gattis on Thursday. Braves reliever David Carpenter was also fined for throwing at Rockies outfielder Corey Dickerson in the same game, which featured several ejections, including Colorado manager Walt Weiss.
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Penn State athletic director David Joyner will step down August 1 after nearly three years at the post. Joyner steered the department following the Jerry Sandusky scandal and Joe Paterno’s death. He took over in November 2011 after Tim Curley was placed on administrative leave.
