But the game was tied until substitute John Brooks scored on a header off a corner kick in the 86th minute, four minutes after Ghana tied the game.

DETROIT (AP) — The Kansas City Royals are within a half-game of the AL Central lead after earning their eighth straight win. The Royals rocked Justin Verlander for seven runs and 12 hits in six innings of an 11-8 win against the first-place Tigers in Detroit. Omar Infante (ihn-FAHN’-tay) belted a three-run homer and had four RBIs while the Royals were building an 11-2 lead.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Baltimore Orioles catcher Matt Wieters (WEE’-turz) will undergo season-ending surgery on his right elbow today. Wieters had his ailing elbow examined by Dr. James Andrews yesterday after sitting out since May 10. He was hitting .309 with five home runs and 18 RBIs in 26 games.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Clippers have restructured their front office after winning the Pacific Division title and advancing to the second round of the NBA playoffs this year. Doc Rivers remains the head coach and will serve as the team’s president of basketball operations. Kevin Eastman is the Clippers’ vice president of basketball operations, pro scouting director Dave Wohl (wohl) is the new general manager and former GM Gary Sacks has been demoted to assistant GM.

IRVING, Texas (AP) — The Cowboys have signed first-round pick Zack Martin, leaving second-rounder and defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence as the only Dallas rookie not under contract. Martin inked a four-year package worth $9 million, including a $4.8 million signing bonus. The Notre Dame product is the third offensive lineman taken in the first round by the Cowboys in the past four drafts.
