City Council Accepts Work on Low Head Dam

Posted on 22 April 2014 by KWBG

BOONE, Iowa—The Boone City Council officially accepted the work on the Low Head Dam located at the Boone Water Works on the Des Moines River.  The modification included placing large rocks and stones creating a rapids.  The project was agreed to by the Council in the settlement of a court case involving the drowning of 22 year old Megan Pavelick, an Iowa State student.  That accident occurred in 2006.

Richardson Construction from Sac City and Keller Construction from Boone were involved with the work.  Boone Mayor John Slight says the contractors were very good to work with and the Council did approve a couple of extensions this winter when work was slowed by the weather.  Slight also said the Iowa Department of Natural Resources were instrumental in helping get the project done.

Higher water levels on the Des Moines River hide much of the work done to modify and improve safety at Boone Water Works.
