JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) — The Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks have touched down in New Jersey for next Sunday’s Super Bowl at the Meadowlands. Broncos coach John Fox told reporters that placekicker Matt Prater will be fine for the NFL title game. Prater missed practice all week with the flu.
MIAMI (AP) — Tampa Bay Buccaneers executive Dennis Hickey has been hired as general manager of the Miami Dolphins, ending a three-week search. Hickey had been with the Buccaneers for 18 seasons, including the past three as director of player personnel. He was their director of college scouting for six years.
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Free agent pitcher Matt Garza and the Milwaukee Brewers have reached agreement on a four-year contract. Brewers’ owner Mark Attanasio says the contract still has to go through “final approval.” The 30-year-old righty went 10-6 with a 3.82 earned run average last season for the Cubs and Rangers. Garza would join Yovani Gallardo (gy-YAR’-doh) and Kyle Lohse (lohsh) at the top of Milwaukee’s rotation.
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Scott Stallings earned his third PGA victory by rallying to capture the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines, finishing one stroke ahead of five others. Stallings capped a 4-under-par 68 with a birdie on the par-5 18th hole for a 9-under total. K.J. Choi, Jason Day, Graham DeLaet, Pat Perez and Marc Leishman share second.
PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas (AP) — Jessica Korda won the season-opening Bahamas LPGA Classic for her second tour title. She edged fellow American Stacy Lewis with a 6-foot birdie putt on the final hole. The 20-year-old Korda closed with a 7-under 66 for a 19-under total.
