Pack the Pantry Political Challenge

Pack the Pantry Boone Co Reps vs Dem to help food shelves in Boone CoYou hear a lot of buzz about political parties squaring off in battle.  And December finds the same thing happening right here in Boone County.  But with one big difference:  no matter who finishes in first place, all are winners.  Boone County Republicans and Democrats are fighting to the finish to see who can gather the  most non-perishable items to donate to area food pantires.  Lots and lots of heavy food pantry items such as canned goods, boxed dinners, paper products and laundry detergents are on the list of items each party is hoping to gather.  Together, they hope to donate 1000 pounds.

Marti Melton Streeter, representing the local GOP, came up with the idea as a result of the time she spends volunteering at local food pantries.  Realizing how great the need is, she challenged Greg Piklapp of the Boone County Democrats to a friendly competition.  Or should we say “friendly.”

Weigh ins will be held each Monday in December, and the totals are cumulative.  As of this week’s weigh ins, the Dems were leading by  about 10 pounds – 224.4 lbs of donated food for the Dems and  GOP’s supporters donated 213.8 lbs. During the KWBG interview on Thursday, Streeter protested that she had another full box of donations at home; she didn’t have room in her car to take it all to the first weigh in. Piklapp’s skeptical response set the tone for the rest of the interview.

But truly, both parties are pursuing this competition with a sense of fun and focusing on the true spirit of the season.  And with nearly half their original goal achieved after only the first weigh in, it appears that folks are sharing in that spirit.  No matter who claims the bragging rights, all are winners because of the volumes of contributions to our local food pantries.
