MEXICO CITY (AP) — The first regular-season NBA game in Mexico since 1997 had to be postponed due to heavy smoke that filtered through the arena. The San Antonio Spurs and Minnesota Timberwolves were warming up before last night’s game when several lights went out and smoke began coming out of vents in the upper deck. Mexico City Police said in a statement the smoke was caused by a fire in the generator room on the fourth floor of the arena.
EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — North Carolina has knocked off the top-ranked team in men’s basketball as J.P. Tokoto had 12 points and a career-high 10 rebounds in the Tar Heels’ 79-65 win at Michigan State. The Tar Heels are the first unranked nonconference team to beat the Spartans in East Lansing since Toledo in December 2002. North Carolina’s season includes a win over defending national-champion Louisville and losses to Belmont and Alabama-Birmingham.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — The prosecutor overseeing the investigation of sexual assault allegations against Florida State quarterback Jameis (JAYM’-ihs) Winston says it is completed. State Attorney Willie Meggs has scheduled a news conference for this afternoon to announce his findings in the December 2012 incident. A lawyer for Winston has suggested that the star quarterback and the accuser had consensual sex, but the victim’s family has accused the 19-year-old of rape.
PITTSBURGH (AP) — The NFL has fined Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin $100,000 for interfering with a play against the Baltimore Ravens on Thanksgiving. The league said it would consider docking Pittsburgh a draft pick “because the conduct affected a play on the field.” The NFL also said Tomlin should have been flagged 15 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct for nearly colliding with Baltimore’s Jacoby Jones during a kickoff return midway through the third quarter of a 22-20 Ravens victory.
DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Tigers have agreed to terms with free-agent closer Joe Nathan on a two-year contract with a club option for 2016. Nathan went 9-7 with 80 saves and a 2.09 ERA in two seasons with the Rangers before becoming a free agent last month. He addresses a pressing need for the Tigers, who won the AL Central at 93-69 but finished just 11th in the American League with 39 saves.
