Council Votes To Extend Open Burning

Posted on 04 November 2013 by KWBG

BOONE,  Iowa—The Boone City Council voted 4-to-3 Monday to extend open burning of yard waste to November 29th.  Council member Nick Mallas brought the matter up at the end of the meeting.   Mallas said he had been contacted by a resident that was concerned that there are still leaves that have not fallen and with rain expected there may not be enough time to burn yard waste.   Council member Gary Nystrom said he also had someone contact him with the same concern.   Council member Greg Piklapp said he couldn’t support an extension.   He noted that traffic using free yard waste disposal at the landfill has been increasing.

The original ordinance,  initated by a petition calling for a ban on open burning, was a compromise allowing open burning of yard waste only for a set time in the spring and fall.  The Council already amended the ordinance to allow open burning until 7:00 PM in the fall.  A change from the original 5:00 PM.  Open burning in the fall begins October 1st and would have continued until November 15th.
