LOUIS (AP) — The World Series is tied at two games apiece after Jonny Gomes (gohmz) smacked a tiebreaking, three-run homer in the sixth inning to give the Boston Red Sox a 4-2 win over the Cardinals in St. Louis. Gomes was a late addition to the starting lineup after outfielder Shane Victorino was scratched due to tightness in his lower back. David Ortiz had three of the Red Sox’s six hits and scored twice.

MARTINSVILLE, Va. (AP) — Jeff Gordon has snapped a 32-race winless streak by using a late pass of Matt Kenseth to win at Martinsville Speedway. The four-time series champion passed Kenseth with 21 laps remaining to take the lead and pick up his eighth career victory at the half-mile oval. Kenseth finished second and Jimmie Johnson was fifth, leaving them tied atop the Sprint Cup standings with three races remaining.
UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) — The New York Islanders have acquired Thomas Vanek from the Buffalo Sabres for Matt Moulson, a first-round pick in 2014 and a second-rounder in 2015. Vanek has four goals and 13 points in 13 games this season. Moulson has played 11 games this season, netting six goals and nine points.
ISTANBUL (AP) — Serena Williams ended her best season in style, rallying past Li Na (lee nah) 2-6, 6-3, 6-love for her second straight WTA Championship and 11th title of the year. She became the first player to successfully defend the WTA title since Justine Henin (EH’-nen) in 2007. This was Williams’ fourth WTA Championship.
