BOONE, Iowa—The Boone County SAFE Coalition participated in Parent Teacher Conferences at the Boone Middle School this week with a “Hidden in Plain Sight” display. The mock up of a student’s room was viewed by more than 100 people. Kelly Wooden reported that the room allowed parents to raise a lot of questions. The mock room did allow many parents to become more educated about issues facing their children. Wooden said she did talk about the statistics available for alcohol, marijuana, prescription medications, cigarettes and other over the counter medications. The statistics compare 6th, 8th and 11th graders from Boone County and compare the numbers to state and national information.
Wooden points out that not all kids that have items seen in the mock room use drugs or alcohol, in fact she notes that most do not take part in that kind of behavior. The SAFE Coalition is expected to consider using the mock room set up at other schools and locations in the future. Here is a photo of the set up used by the SAFE Coalition.
