LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers are within two games to one in the National League Championship Series after Hyun-Jin Ryu (hyoon-jihn ree-OO’) allowed just three hits over seven innings of a 3-0 shutout of the St. Louis Cardinals. Adrian Gonzalez sparked the Dodgers’ first rally, stroking an RBI single before scoring on Yasiel Puig’s (YAH’-see-ul pweegz) triple. Losing pitcher Adam Wainwright allowed two runs and six hits in seven innings after entering the game 4-0 with a 2.03 ERA lifetime in the postseason.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The San Diego Chargers controlled the ball for more than 38 minutes and didn’t allow a touchdown in a 19-9 win over the Indianapolis Colts. Philip Rivers was 22 of 33 for 237 yards, no interceptions and a second-quarter touchdown that put San Diego ahead to stay. Ryan Mathews ran for 102 yards as the Chargers improved to 3-3 and dropped the Colts to 4-2.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — The Buffalo Bills have signed free-agent quarterback Matt Flynn, although coach Doug Marrone all but ruled out Flynn’s chances of starting Sunday against the Dolphins in Miami. Flynn accepted a deal after spending yesterday morning working out for a team that’s been scrambling to add quarterbacks since rookie starter EJ Manuel sprained his right knee in a 37-24 loss to Cleveland on Oct. 3. Backup Thad Lewis started yesterday’s loss to Cincinnati and threw a pair of fourth-quarter touchdown passes despite a sprained ankle.

CONCORD, N.C. (AP) — Brian Vickers will miss the rest of the NASCAR season because of a blood clot in his right calf. Vickers was placed on blood-thinning medication once the clot was discovered today. He missed the final 25 races of the 2010 season with blood clots, and during that time required heart surgery. He said in a statement his physicians are confident he’ll be able to resume activity before next season.

MORAGA, Calif. (AP) — The NCAA has upheld penalties against the St. Mary’s men’s basketball program for recruiting violations. That means coach Randy Bennett must serve a five-game suspension and won’t be allowed to recruit off campus this season. The NCAA put Saint Mary’s on four years of probation earlier this year for a “failure to monitor its men’s basketball program,” reducing scholarships by two for the next two seasons.
