ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals have advance to the National League Championship Series by downing the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-1 in Game 5 of the NLDS. David Freese (freez) and Matt Adams hit two-run homers to support Adam Wainwright, who went the distance on an eight-hitter. Next up for the Cardinals are the Los Angeles Dodgers, beginning Friday in St. Louis.

NEW YORK (AP) — Manager Joe Girardi has accepted a four-year contract that keeps him in the New York Yankees’ dugout. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman had said he wanted to retain Girardi, an Illinois native whose name was mentioned for the Cubs opening. The Yankees have gone a major league-best 564-408 with four postseason appearances in six years under Girardi, but they come off their worst season since 1992 and missed the playoffs for only the second time in 19 years.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith has been charged with three felony counts of illegal possession of an assault weapon, stemming from a party at his home in June 2012. The Santa Clara County district attorney’s office said Smith is expected to surrender on his own later this month. The 24-year-old Smith is on an indefinite leave of absence from the NFC-champion Niners while undergoing treatment for substance abuse at an in-patient facility following a DUI arrest last month.

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) — Defensive end Brian Robison has signed a four-year contract extension with the Minnesota Vikings. A person with knowledge of the deal tells The Associated Press it includes $12 million in guaranteed money. Robison was a fourth-round draft pick of the Vikings in 2007.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles City Council has reaffirmed its support for efforts to bring an NFL team to the nation’s second-largest city. Members have voted 14-0 today for a resolution saying it is in the interests of both the city and the league to bring a team to Los Angeles. A year ago, the council approved a plan by the sports and entertainment company AEG to build a $1.5 billion downtown stadium, but construction can’t begin until a team is secured.
