UNDATED (AP) — The Cleveland Indians beat the Minnesota Twins yesterday to win the first AL wild-card berth and set up a one-game playoff against either Texas or Tampa Bay at Progressive Field on Wednesday. The Rangers forced a one-game playoff for the second wild-card berth by defeating the Angels 6-2 after the Rays hung on for a 7-6 win at Toronto. The Rangers have won seven straight and will host Tampa Bay tonight.

MIAMI (AP) — Miami Marlins pitcher Henderson Alvarez has tossed the first season-ending no-hitter in the majors since Mike Witt of the Angels threw a perfect game at Texas in 1984. However, the gem wasn’t official until Giancarlo Stanton scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth to give the Marlins a 1-0 win over Detroit.

HOUSTON (AP) — The Seattle Seahawks are the NFC’s lone 4-0 team right now, although New Orleans will join them if the Saints beat Miami tonight. Steven Hauschka kicked a 45-yard field goal in overtime to give the Seattle Seahawks a 23-20 win over the Houston Texans and the first 4-0 start in franchise history. The Hawks trailed 20-3 at halftime but eventually forced overtime on Richard Sherman’s 58-yard interception return for a touchdown with 2:40 left in regulation.

DOVER, Del. (AP) — Jimmie Johnson has moved into second place in the Sprint Cup standings, eight points behind Matt Kenseth after winning at Dover yesterday. Johnson led for 243 of 400 laps and held off Dale Earnhardt Jr. for his eighth Sprint Cup victory at Dover, breaking the track record he shared with Richard Petty and Bobby Allison. Joey Logano was third, followed by Jeff Gordon and Kyle Busch.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Lane Kiffin has been fired as football coach at Southern California. The dismissal came just hours after the Trojans dropped to 0-2 in conference play after a 62-41 loss at Arizona State. Kiffin went 28-15 at USC in parts of four seasons, but his team is 0-2 in conference play for the first time since 2001.
