DENVER (AP) — Peyton Manning completed 32 of his 37 passes for 374 yards and three more touchdowns last night as Denver whipped the Oakland Raiders 37-21 to improve to 3-0. Manning hit Eric Decker, Julius Thomas and Wes Welker for touchdowns in the Broncos’ third straight lopsided win. Manning has set an NFL record with 12 touchdown throws in his first three games, breaking the mark of 11 set by New England’s Tom Brady in 2011.
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers are prepared to go forward without star linebacker Aldon Smith for as long as it takes for him to get clean, healthy and improve his life. Smith was placed on the reserve non-football injury list Monday as he enters rehab for substance abuse and begins what team CEO Jed York has termed an indefinite absence. Head coach Jim Harbaugh said Dan Skuta, Ahmad Brooks and Corey Lemonier will help fill the void left by Smith, who had a franchise-best 19 ½ sacks last season.

The Pirates beat the Chicago Cubs 2-1 on Starling Marte’s two-out homer in the ninth, and the Reds got a walkoff single from Shin-Soo Choo in the 10th inning to top the New York Mets 3-2. Carlos Beltran hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer and Adam Wainwright notched his 18th win as the Redbirds eliminated the Nationals from postseason contention.
