MILWAUKEE (AP) – The Pittsburgh Pirates were unable to clinch their first winning season in 21 years last night, leaving them with a one-game lead over St. Louis in the National League Central. The Brewers reached Francisco Liriano for seven runs in just three innings of a 9-3 win over the Pirates in Milwaukee. The Cardinals inched closer to the Pirates in the standings as Matt Adams belted his second extra-inning homer of the night in the top of the 16th to lift the Redbirds past Cincinnati 5-4.

NEW YORK (AP) – Today’s U.S. Open schedule is highlighted by men’s quarterfinal action, beginning with Andy Murray against No. 9 Stanislas Wawrinka before top seed Novak Djokovic (JOH’-koh-vihch) battles Mikhail Youzhny (YOOZ’-nee). Second seed Rafael Nadal (nah-DAHL’) cruised into the semifinals with a 6-love, 6-2, 6-2 win over No. 19 Tommy Robredo (roh-BREH’-doh). Nadal next faces eighth seed Richard Gasquet (gas-KAY’), who had been 1-8 all-time against fourth seed David Ferrer (dah-VEED’ feh-REHR’) before beating the Spaniard 6-3, 6-1, 4-6, 2-6, 6-3.

DENVER (AP) – Denver Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey won’t play in the NFL season opener against Baltimore tonight because of a sprained left foot. He hasn’t practiced since getting hurt in a preseason game at Seattle on Aug. 17. Denver will start Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie in Bailey’s place.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith and former Niners tight end Delanie Walker have been named in a lawsuit by a Northern California man who said he was shot during a party at Smith’s house. The suit claims that Smith and Walker fired weapons illegally during a party at Smith’s San Jose home on June 29, 2012.

UNDATED (AP) – Fred Couples has used his captain’s picks on the 20-year-old Jordan Spieth (SPEETH) and Webb Simpson to fill out his 12-man US Presidents Cup team. Spieth will be the youngest American to play in the Presidents Cup since it began in 1994. Nick Price used his picks on rookies Brendon de Jonge of Zimbabwe and Marc Leishman of Australia as the International team tries to win for only the second time
