JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) – Adam Scott closed with a 5-under-par 66 to win The Barclays by one stroke over four others. Scott finished at 11-under 273 and moved to a career-best No. 2 in the world in winning the first event of the FedEx Cup playoffs. Tiger Woods, Justin Rose, Gary Woodland and Graham DeLaet tied for second, one shot ahead of Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk (FYOOR’-ihk) and D.A. Points.

UNDATED (AP) – John Riegger is the Champions Tour’s second first-time winner in as many weeks, taking the Boeing Classic by two strokes over John Cook. Riegger closed with a 4-under-par 68 for a 15-under total. And sixteen-old amateur Lydia Ko shot a final round 6-under 64 to successfully defend her title in the Canadian Women’s Open.

SONOMA, Calif. (AP) – Will Power won at Sonoma Raceway for the third time in four years. Power earned his first victory of the IndyCar season by taking advantage of a late penalty to Scott Dixon for injuring three members of Power’s pit crew. Dixon led until he received a drive-through penalty with 15 laps to go.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) – New York Giants free safety Stevie Brown will miss the regular season with a torn ACL in his left knee that he hurt in Saturday’s preseason overtime loss to the Jets. Brown led the Giants with eight interceptions last season.

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) – Ryusei Hirooka lined a decisive two-run double in the bottom of the fifth inning leading Japan to a 6-4 win over Chula Vista, Calif. for the Little League World Series title. It was the 14th championship game for Japan, which was making its fourth straight appearance in the title game, and ninth title.
