NEW YORK (AP) – A lawyer for Alex Rodriguez has declined Major League Baseball’s challenge to make public the drug evidence that led to the 211-game suspension of the New York Yankees star, calling the letter written by MLB executive vice-president Rob Manfred “a cheap publicity stunt.” Manfred urged attorney Joseph Tacopina (tah-kah-PEE’-nah) to waive his client’s confidentiality under baseball’s Joint Drug Agreement so the documents could be released. Tacopina had said he wanted to discuss evidence publicly but was constrained by the provision.

MILWAUKEE (AP) – A former college classmate sued Ryan Braun, saying the Brewers slugger sought his help in fighting a failed drug test, balked on paying him and then disparaged him when asked why their friendship soured. Milwaukee law student Ralph Sasson said Braun’s agent hired him in November 2011 to do legal research aimed at clearing Braun after the left fielder tested positive for steroid use. The lawsuit filed in Milwaukee County court says the agent later asked him to investigate the man who collected Braun’s urine, and that Braun personally asked Sasson to prank call two journalists working on a story about the failed test.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) – The Los Angeles Angels say slugger Albert Pujols (POO’-hohlz) is done for the season because of an injured left foot. Pujols hasn’t played since July 26 and was hoping to return when his partially torn plantar fascia healed. The 33-year-old Pujols hit .258 with 17 home runs and 64 RBIs this year.

UNDATED (AP) – The 2013 Sprint Cup season is over for three-time Cup champion Tony Stewart because of broken bones in his right leg. Stewart broke his right leg in a sprint car crash in Iowa earlier this month and is expected to return in time for preseason testing next January. He will be replaced in the Stewart-Hass No. 14 car by Austin Dillon and Mark Martin.

UNDATED (AP) – The Giants aren’t sure when wide receiver Victor Cruz will return to practice after suffering a bruised left heel in Sunday’s preseason game against Indianapolis. Also in the NFL, Blaine Gabbert has been tabbed as the Jaguars starting quarterback for the season despite a broken thumb that will cause him to miss the rest of the exhibition season. And the Bills have released longtime kicker Rian Lindell (RY’-an lihn-DEL’), who spent the last 10 years in Buffalo.
