BOONE, Iowa—After a month of dealing with a contract that withdrew a bid to paint two of the three water towers in Boone, the City Council acted on a recommendation from the Utility Committee and awarded the contract for the work to the J.R. Stelzer Company from Lincoln, Nebraska.  The Stelzer bid was the next lowest after K&W Coatings of Elkader, Iowa withdrew their bid after they were awarded the contract by Council action in mid-July.  Since then, the Utility Committee has turned the matter over to the City Attorney, Jim Robbins, to pursue the bid bond submitted with each bid.  In this case, they are pursuing a bond of $13, 725.  The bid from Stelzer is $233,856.

When the situation comes up, which is seldom, Boone Mayor John Slight says the Council first wants to make sure there is adequate funds available to get the work done.  In this case, the work could have been rebid, but he said there would be not guarantee the bids would not increase in 2014.  Since Stelzer is available, the Council did approve the bid for the work on the Greene Street and the Industrial Park Road water towers.  Slight did say the bid by K&W was close to the engineers estimate, but was well below the other three bids.  After the Stelzer Company, there was Maquire Iron from Sioux Falls at $264,210 and Classic Protective Coatings of Menomonie, WI at $321,937.

Slight, on the KWBG News/Public Affairs Program Tuned In Tuesday said they hope the work will be completed yet this fall.  If not, the contract will insure the work will be done at the bid price next year.
