DETROIT (AP) – Prince Fielder homered for the first time in three weeks, hitting a two-run shot in the first inning to help the Detroit Tigers to a 4-1 victory over the Kansas City to win the opener of a five-game series with the third-place Royals. KC has lost three straight after going on a 17-3 run that put them within striking distance of a playoff berth in the AL Central.

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Matt Holliday delivered a game-ending RBI single in the 12th inning as the St. Louis Cardinals beat Pittsburgh 6-5 to take two of three from the Pirates and claw within two games of the NL Central leads. The Pirates have dropped five of six.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP)- After giving his New England teammates a scare Wednesday when he suffered a sprained knee during practice, Patriots QB Tom Brady wore a knee brace and declared he’s “good” and participated in the Pats’ walkthrough practice yesterday. It is not known if Brady will play in tonight’s exhibition game against Tampa Bay.

PARKER, Colo. (AP) – The 13th Solheim Cup matches start today between the United States and Europe at Colorado Golf Club. The European women posted a 15-13 win over the Americans two years ago, although the U.S. holds an 8-4 advantage all-time in the series.
