LOS ANGELES (AP) – The Los Angeles Dodgers made it 39 wins in their last 47 games by beating the Mets’ ace, scoring four times off Matt Harvey over six innings of a 4-2 win against New York. Harvey had a 1-0 lead until Nick Punto hit a two-run double in the fifth, one inning before A.J. Ellis poked a two-run single. The Dodgers have their first seven-game winning streak in more than three years and a 7 1/2-game lead over second-place Arizona in the NL West.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – The Kansas City Royals lost for only the fourth time in 21 games to stay 3 1/2 games behind Oakland for the second AL wild-card berth. Miami beat the Royals 1-0 on Christian Yelich’s (YEH’-liks) RBI single in the top of the 10th. Marlins rookie starter Jose Fernandez lowered his ERA to 2.45 but gained a no-decision after limiting the Royals to three hits while striking out six in seven innings.
PITTSBURGH (AP) – The Pittsburgh Steelers have put wide receiver Plaxico Burress (PLEK’-sih-koh BUR’-ihs) on the injured reserve list, likely ending his season. The 36-year old had surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder Monday. Burress has caught 553 passes for 8,499 yards and 64 touchdowns in the regular season with the Steelers, Giants and Jets.
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.H. (AP) – New York Giants safety Antrel Rolle (rohl) says he sustained a “pretty good” sprain to his right ankle and does not know when he will be able to return to practice. The Giants leading tackler the past two seasons wore a protective boot on his foot, after being injured at practice Monday.
UNDATED (AP) – Brian Vickers has picked up a full-time ride for the Sprint Cup Series with Michael Waltrip Racing starting next season. That marks a significant comeback by the 29-year old Vickers who had his racing career derailed in May 2010, when doctors discovered blood clots in his legs and lungs. Meanwhile, Juan Pablo Montoya has been informed by team owner Chip Ganassi that he is cutting ties with one of the world’s most decorated drivers, effective at the end of the season.
